It is a part of #culturalheritage
For Hindus traditionally it has a heritage of prayers, reciting the Ramayana chapters, temple visits, remembering our ancestors etc.
For #ayurveda, it is a month of #preventive Ayurveda, just like a vaccination.
Instead of vaccine here adopting 'Karkidaka. Chikitsa' and most importantly Karkadaka kanji a medicated gruel.
โKarnataka Kanji
๐น It is a unique combination of herbs, spices, and grains
๐น Use as a preventive method for monsoon fevers, cold, flu etc rainy diseases.
๐นThis will impart good immune strength as well as kindle digestive power which becomes feeble in the rainy season.
The traditional ingredients:
๐นshastika shall (rice variety)
๐น fenu greek seed processed in Bala ksheera kashaya (milk decoction of Sida cordifolia L.)
๐นspices like pippali (piper longum L.), dry ginger, black pepper, and cumin seed are added to it.
Regional ingredients:
Dry spices and medicines cumin, coriander seeds, dried ginger, pepper, Indian long pepper (thippali), โkurunthottiโ, ela Ivanka and cardamom local fresh herbs such as poovankurunnila, cherula, kurunthotti, truth, thiruthali, muyalcheviyan, thazhuthama are mainly used in the medicinal Karkidaka kanji in the Malabar region
Side dish:
Chutney
Made with grated coconut, dry red chillies, curry leaves, shallots, a pinch of seedless tamarind, a small piece of jaggery and salt to taste.
Method of preparation:
Roast every ingredient in coconut oil except jaggery and salt. Grind the roasted mixture.
Then add jaggery gratings and salt to taste.
drinking water boiled with cumin seeds to eliminate dehydration.
Another special diet:
This practice is prevalent in Kozhikode and Malappuram, Kerala
In Malabar households, the Karkidakam diet also contains meat.
In the ancient ayurvedic book Ashtanga Hridayam, there is a part (slokam) about consuming non-vegetarian dishes during the rainy season, like ajamamsam aka mutton soup.
- marunnu kozhi (medicinal chicken)
- jeeraka kozhi (cumin chicken)
- mutton leg soup.
These dishes have rejuvenating properties, especially for women.
Types of cumin
can be used โ
- normal ones (Cumin seeds)
- perum jeerakam (fennel seeds)
- Karim jeerakam (black cumin seeds).
Ground the seeds and coat on the chicken. Chicken is cooked in ghee, sesame oil and coconut oil. Packaged salt should not be added, instead, use rock salt.
Traditionally the month of Karkidaka is the time to identify good and evil, right and wrong. Therefore, it is said that the rituals of this holy season include separating the good from the bad and entering into a new year known as Chingam the new year according to the Malayalam calendar
